Abstract

ABSTRACT

The elderly population in Indonesia continues to increase, accompanied by a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and stroke due to the aging process and a sedentary lifestyle. Elderly participants of the Posyandu Lansia in Dusun Brumbung, Ledokdawan Village, Geyer District, Grobogan Regency, mostly lacked adequate understanding of the types, risk factors, and prevention of NCDs, and rarely performed regular physical activity such as elderly gymnastics (senam lansia). This community service activity aimed to optimize elderly health by increasing knowledge of NCD prevention and physical fitness through elderly gymnastics. The activity used health education (lectures, discussions, leaflets/posters), simple health screening (blood pressure and blood glucose), and structured demonstration and practice of elderly gymnastics (warm-up, core movement, cool-down). Twenty-four elderly participants attended and actively took part in the question-and-answer session and gymnastics practice. Evaluation results showed improved understanding of NCDs, the CERDIK behavior, and the benefits of elderly gymnastics, along with high enthusiasm for practicing the movements. Screening revealed that some participants had above-normal blood pressure or blood glucose and were advised to seek routine check-ups at the nearest health facility. This activity shows that integrating health education with structured physical activity is an effective, low-cost, and easily implemented promotive-preventive strategy that can be sustained through routine Posyandu Lansia activities.
