Background: Primiparous mothers may have limited experience and knowledge in selecting appropriate contraceptive methods after childbirth. Inadequate knowledge may affect their readiness and interest in contraceptive decision-making. Therefore, structured education is needed to improve reproductive health literacy and support informed contraceptive choices.
Purpose: This community service activity aimed to improve knowledge of contraceptive methods among primiparous mothers at Puskesmas Wirosari 1.
Method: The activity involved 10 primiparous mothers in the working area of Puskesmas Wirosari 1. The educational intervention covered the definition and objectives of contraception, types of contraceptive methods, long-acting and non-long-acting methods, benefits, limitations, possible side effects, and considerations in selecting contraceptive methods. Education was delivered interactively using educational media, followed by discussion, question-and-answer sessions, and individual consultation. Knowledge was evaluated using pre-test and post-test scores.
Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 52.00 ± 4.92 before education to 79.80 ± 4.71 after education, representing an increase of 27.80 points. All participants demonstrated an increase in their individual knowledge scores following the educational intervention. These findings indicate an improvement in participants' understanding of contraceptive selection following the education program.
Conclusion: Contraceptive education can be used as a promotive strategy to improve reproductive health literacy among primiparous mothers. Continuous education combined with individual counseling and accessible educational media is recommended to support informed contraceptive decision-making.
